Monday Letter 08-19-09
Wednesday, August 19, 2009
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to your child’s 5th grade school year! I am so excited to get the new school year started and begin working with your children. I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing summer. This week we will spend time going over procedures and rules that will allow our class to run effectively and smoothly.
Please send a water bottle with your child to school. It is still quite warm out, and we do not have access to a fountain inside the classroom. Our class will be learning how to raise and lower the American flag in the morning, so water bottles would be very helpful after this activity. Eventually student helpers will be responsible for this patriotic duty each morning and after school.
Homework this week will be very light. We will be getting into a routine starting next week. Every Monday we will take a spelling pre-test; if your child receives a 100% they will not be required to take the test on Friday. Our first spelling test will be next Friday, and students will also be required to memorize a Bible verse from their handwriting notebook. The Bible verse can be found in each lesson section as Day 4. Students will start by writing the Bible verse, in cursive, and then take the Spelling test.
If your child would like to have milk for lunch, please send money starting Thursday. Students can buy milk each day or pay in advance.
I always enjoy the start of the new school year! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at St. Ann School, 375-4713, Monday-Friday between 7:00 am and 2:40 pm and leave me a message including how I can get back to you. You can also e-mail me at fifthgrade@parishofsaintann.org. I look forward to meeting you and working with your child this year.
Sincerely,
Shanon Bromley
Religion- We will be working on Chapter 1 (Speak, Lord). We will be discussing and learning the many ways God reveals himself to us. Students will take a chapter test next week.
Math- We will begin working on Spiral review work-sheets reviewing 4th grade concepts. Students will have a worksheet for homework, and we will go over the concepts in class again the next day.
English– We will be working on spelling strategies that will help us to become better spellers.
Spelling-
Spelling homework will follow the same pattern each week. Students will work on one page per night Monday-Wednesday. Every Friday students will turn in a 10 sentence paragraph using any 5 spelling words in context.
Social Studies- We will begin practicing how to raise and lower the American flag. Students will learn about the history of the flag, as well as important facts about it.
Science- We will go over safety rules and procedures during Science labs. We will have a quiz over this next week.
Homework will be very light this week. We will get into a routine starting next week. If you would like to get a jump start on things, your child may start practicing the spelling words listed on the right side of this page. These words will be next week’s list, but I wanted to list them for you ahead of time. Your child can also study their multiplication facts nightly. We will be having a timed test every Friday that will consist of 100 problems to be completed in 5 minutes. We will start with 2’s for this weeks test. Students need to receive a 95% to pass on to the next test. They will continue to repeat the test each Friday until a 95% is achieved.
