Kindergarten is Orientation

  • A bridge between home/preschool and school

  • Learning to get along with classmates, to take turns, and to respect the rights of others
  • Developing a positive self-esteem and independence

Kindergarten is Experiencing

  • A year of learning that lays the foundation for life
  • A year of carefully planned experiences designed to establish academic readiness
  • Building with blocks, dramatizing stories, cutting, pasting, painting, center activities
  • Participating in hands on math and science experiences
  • Learning letter names, sounds, basic sight words

Kindergarten is Acquiring Tools Necessary for Reading

  • To build vocabulary, to know words and to use words
  • Learn to use and love books
  • Time for listening to stories read aloud and answering questions about the stories
  • Time for being exposed to written word
  • Time for experiencing stories and charts; to learn what can be said and written; and what can be written and read
  • Participating in Shared and Guided Reading

Kindergarten is Writing

  • Developing large muscles and fine muscles
  • Learning to coordinate hand muscles with eye muscles
  • Manipulating toys and puzzles and play dough
  • Finger-painting, drawing, coloring, and pasting
  • Learning to write one's own name correctly;using a capital letter for the first letter and lowercase letters for the rest of the name
  • Shared, modeled and dictated writing experiences
  • Learning to write using phonetic/sound spelling

Kindergarten is Mathematics

  • Building number concepts
  • Using manipulatives to explore one to one correspondence, sorting, grouping, adding and subtracting
  • Comparing sizes, recognizing shapes, colors, likenesses and differences, how many and how few (attributes)
  • Position and comparison words
  • Creating and extending patterns
  • Estimating, collecting data, and building graphs
  • Writing the numerals from 1-30
  • Counting to 100 and skip counting
