The Assignment Book
Each student in 4th through 8th grade has received an assignment book. This is the place where your child must write down his or her homework each day. Students are required to bring the assignment booklet home each night and return it each morning.
Homework
Homework must be completed on time, otherwise points will be deducted. Also, at lunch study hall, the student may be required to:
- Complete the assignment
- Do extra work if the student was unable to do the assignment because the materials that were needed had been forgotten
At times there are good reasons why homework was unable to be completed; in these cases, a parent should send in a note indicating the reason - illness, unexpected visitor, etc. Assignments must generally be made up. If there is a parent note and the reason is valid, the above consequences will not be given. Valid reasons do not include forgetting to bring something home to complete the assignment or not having enough time because of extracurricular activities. Responsibility is one of the things we will be working on this year. Please let your child know that I will not be mad at them if they don't have their homework - at this stage of development many children are in tears crying to their parents that I will be angry. Please comfort them and say that Mrs. Stenger-Smith sometimes forgets things too; however, it is important that we try to see why it happened and try to prevent it in the future. I will always ask a student why homework was not complete, and we will work on techniques to rectify the problem. I encourage you to have your child tell me directly if there is not a valid reason-this is a growth process in itself for some children.
Please see me if you feel like your child is overwhelmed with homework. Children work at very different rates, and have varying abilities of concentration. Homework should take 70 minutes per day. Children need to learn to work efficiently in class to reduce homework. Generally, I give no homework on weekends.
The Homework Folder (Red)
Any worksheets or materials that are to be done at home for homework will be placed in the Red Folder labeled Homework. Any “Finished Homework” is to also be placed in this folder to return to school the next day. This red folder must be brought to and from school daily.
Returned Assignments/Tests (Orange)
Papers, quizzes, and tests are returned in class so that I can go over any problems with the class. Papers will be placed in the Orange “Take Home” Folder. Please keep these papers until the end of the quarter. I enter hundreds of scores a week into a computer program; and if I make a mistake, your hard copy of a graded paper will be necessary for the grade change. A Progress Report listing the score on every assignment and assessment will be sent home half way through the quarter. I suggest you use an envelope or a box at home to keep returned papers until the end of the Quarter. I will send home the Orange “Take Home” folder on Fridays; please look for it and remove the returned papers. You may ask your child to bring the Orange folder home at anytime so that you may see these returned papers.
Grades
This year is the first year your child will be earning letter grades. Please remember that an “A” is earned with a 93% or better and “B” is earned with an 85%. Our grading scale makes it challenging to earn these high marks. A “C” means average and is indicative of what many children earn. I would strongly recommend that you stress getting homework done, studying for tests, and reading rather than just stressing getting good grades.
The first days of school will be spent going over
- Expectations/consequences
