READ*READ*READ

  • Read books at your child's reading level that he/she is to read aloud to you
  • YOU read books aloud to your child. Those books will be much higher than your child's reading level, but will be at a listening level for him/her to discuss it with you.

Look in your child's backpack for the red homework folder. Any and all papers in that folder are due the next day. Place all completed homework papers back in that red homework folder and have your child return it to me in the morning. (Even if I do not give homework some nights, that red homework folder will come home to develop the habit of bringing it back and forth daily.

The following outlines show you what we will be covering this first semester. This may give you ideas for discussion with your child, or you may think of activities that will enable you to spend "Academic Time" with your child in a way that is void of stress (e.g. nothing "due" the next day). I plan to update these each semester.

The following is a list of objectives we will work on during our first semester to reach the goal of independent reading by the end of first grade!

  • match oral words to print
  • identify letters, words, sentences
  • distinguish beginning, middle, ending sounds
  • distinguish long and short vowel sounds
  • add, delete, change sounds to make new words
  • blend sounds into words
  • read common words, irregular words, “sight” words
  • recite poems, rhymes, songs, stories
  • use comprehension strategies and skills

Your child is to read from the booklets or books in the orange folder that will often come home inside the red homework folder. The stories in the orange folder are designed to help students practice reading in connected text the sound/spelling relationships they are learning. The students MUST READ AND REREAD these stories to help them gain the fluency they will need to be confident readers. Please replace the orange folder back inside the red homework folder daily so I can check on what your child has read and/or ask a volunteer to listen to your child read the book that was sent home.

bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   WRITING   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes

Reading and writing are interwoven and one helps to build on the other. During this first semester we will:

  • Write a sentence below our drawings
  • Use descriptive words in our writings
  • Work as a class to gather ideas during our “prewriting” time
  • Write individual drafts
  • Learn how to revise, proofread and publish our writings
We will explore different authors and different forms of writing, such as folklore, informational writing, letters, and poetry.

bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   MATH   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes

The first semester of math reviews what has been presented in Kindergarten. We will move from there to explore numbers and patterns to 100, research different ways to add and subtract, learn addition and subtraction facts to 12 and use problem-solving strategies in gathering data and reading and making graphs. The standards for the second semester will build on those skills.

bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   RELIGION   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes

As your child's primary teacher, you are to share your faith with your child by word and example all through this first grade year as “homework”. During our first semester in class we will emphasize that:

  • God communicates to us through the Bible
  • Each of us belongs to many groups: family, parish, school, etc.
  • We become members of God's holy Church through baptism
  • We worship together through prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist, Mass
  • God is our good Father
  • God sent His Son as our Savior
  • Each person deserves love, care and respect.
Each Monday look for directions in the Parent Letter. I will tell you which pages in the religion text to review with your child. Look for the religion book in your child's backpack. Return that book the next day, Tuesday, because we will be using it in class daily.

We will memorize the required prayers in first grade:

  • Sign of the Cross
  • Our Father
  • Hail Mary
  • Mealtime prayers
  • Angel of God

bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   SCIENCE   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes

We will learn about God's world by exploring the weather and how it helps God's creation survive and grow.

We will learn to be good stewards of God's creation. We will learn about living things, animals and plants, and how important it is to care for and use them wisely.

We will complete our unit of the first semester of science with our study of the rainforest. It will culminate in our rainforest skit for our families.

bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   SOCIAL STUDIES   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes   bee2hive.gif - 35x31 - 388 bytes

The children are expected to know that God loves and cares for each of us. We are not only members of God's Church. We are also members of a parish, local, and global community. We are called to interact peacefully with one another and respect the rights of others. We will refer to those expectations as we discuss United States symbols and holidays and begin to use maps and globes to locate our community, state, country, and other world sites.
