6th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, students have begun Part 2 of Unit 4 with the selection “The First Emperor”. In Part 2 “Voices from the Past”, students will read to understand and identify the following literary terms: historical fiction, informative nonfiction, real characters, setting, and plot.
Sp./Voc. test from last Friday was administered Mon., May 9th after a review of the words. Conflicts in scheduling caused a delay to Monday. Sp./Voc. list this week is based on the above selection and the test will be on Fri., May 13th.
Students are beginning a Poetry Booklet this week and a separate information sheet will be sent home.
Outside Reading: Notebook Requirements for “Where the Red Fern Grows” Chap. 19 and 20 are due Tues., May 10th. The complete notebook is due Fri., May 13th. Complete requirements are listed on the first sheet of the student's notebook.

Social Studies- Students are completing Chap. 11 this week and will be tested on Tues., May 10th. Chap. 12 continues with Greece in “Classical Greece” In this chapter, students will read about the nature of classical Greece beginning with Lesson 1, which tells about Greece under the ruler Pericles. In Lesson 2,, “The Peloponnesian Wars”, students will identify the causes of the war and identify decision by Persia, Athens and Sparta that led to the end of the war.

Religion-Students are completing Chap. 19 and 20 this week. The quiz for Chap. 19 is on Tues., May 10 and the quiz for Chap. 20, which is a review of Unit 4, is on Wed., May 11th. Students begin Chap. 21 and will be able to define prophet and the role of the prophet in Israel and relate the idea in their own lives of speaking out against injustices as well as acting for justice.

Science- Students explain what wind is and how it is created by differences in atmospheric pressure. Students will also learn about different types o wind, including trade winds, jet streams, and local winds. Students will have a written test over chapter 15 on Thursday and lab test on Friday.

Math- This week students will finish up Unit 10. Students will be learning about integers. They will be multiplying, dividing, writing them in equations and using them with expressions and equations. There will be a review and test on Monday. They will then begin Unit 11, Coordinate Graphing and rational numbers, on Wednesday.

PE - The softball unit will be finished this week. Next week students will be starting their Lifetime activities unit.

7th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, students are completing the reading of “The Hound of the Baskervilles”. For this week's literature selection, students will read “The Revolt of the Evil Fairies” in which the main character rebels against racial prejudices. Students will make the connection with “Roll of Thunder”, the Outside Reading novel they are presently reading. Sp./Voc. List this week is based on “Revolt of the Evil Fairies”. The test will be on Fri., May 13th.
Students are beginning a Poetry Booklet this week and a separate information sheet will be sent home later this week.
Outside Reading: “Roll of Thunder”, summaries, illustrations, and sentences for chapters 6-8 are due Tues., May 10th. The summaries, illustrations and sentences for Chap. 9-12 are due Tues., May 17th. The next Outside Reading book will be “Tuck Everlasting”. Students who complete “Roll of Thunder” and its requirements early may begin “Tuck”.

Social Studies- Students begin Chap. 15, “The Age of Exploration”, this week. The three lessons in this chapter recount dramatic adventures and discoveries. Lesson 1 explains how mapmaking contributed to the age of exploration and why people were willing to sail unknown seas. The European Age of Exploration is characterized most of all by the quest for knowledge and the application of knowledge to practical situations.

Religion-After learning about our call to holiness and the seven capital sins, students created masks and presented skits illustrating these sins. This week students will learn that just as capital sins are obstacles to holiness, moral and theological virtues help us to be holy.

Science- Students will be creating a animal and its environment this week. They will need to create a new animal, name it, create its environment and tell about it to the class. The finished product will include a poster of the animal and its environment and a summary of one day's activities for the animal. This will all be due on Friday. Their study guide for Chapter 17, is also due on Friday.

Math- Students will have a test over Chapter 10 on Monday. They will then begin Chapter 11, The Coordinate Plane: Graphs and Transformations, on Tuesday. Students will be moving ahead from graphing coordinate pairs to graphing equations of lines through understanding slope and points on a line, They will also begin to observe relationships between symmetric figures in the plane and their coordinate points.

PE - The softball unit will be finished this week. Next week students will be starting their Lifetime activities unit.

8th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, this weeks selections are “Raymond's run” and “Keeping Time”. The thematic link in the first selection centers on a girl's loyalty to, and love for her brother leads her to make important discoveries about him and about herself. In the second, a man's conversation with an old baseball coach helps him make an important discovery about enduring human values.
Sp./Voc. list this week is based on the above selections; the test will be on Fri., May 13th.

Outside Reading: “Across Five Aprils” summaries and illustrations are due for Chapters 4-7 Tues., May 10th. Summaries and illustrations for chapters 8-12 are due Thurs., May 19th.

Social Studies- Students continue in Chapter 13 “Reconstruction” to assess the South's economic hardships after the Civil War and examine the impact of the Black Codes on freed slaves. In Lesson 2, the students will understand how conflicts over Reconstruction policy led to a resolution of impeachment. Also, students will consider the significance of the black vote in the South during Reconstruction.

Science- Students will be exploring the formation of Earth and explain how gravity and rising temperatures cause the planet to become spherical and separate into layers of different density. Students will learn about the stages in the development of Earth's atmosphere and how our atmosphere sustains life today. Finally the will discuss how oceans and continents are formed. There will be a written test on Thursday and lab test on Friday.

Math- Students will be having a review of Chapter 10 on Monday and test on Tuesday. They will then begin Chapter 12, Rational Expressions and Equations. In this chapter students are introduced to inverse variation problems and compare these to direct variation problems. Through inverse variation problems, students are introduced to rational expressions. After being introduced to rational expression, students learn to add, subtract multiply and divide rational expressions. Students go on to learn how to divide polynomials and simplify mixed expressions and complex fractions. This chapter ends with a lesson on how to solve rational equations.

PE - The softball unit will be finished this week. Next week students will be starting their Lifetime activities unit.

Health - Students will be learning about different techniques to control and manage stress.

General Notes:

Middle School Field Trip is scheduled for next Tuesday, May 17th. They will be going to Manzanar Relocation Camp. We will be leaving at 7:30, so your student needs to be on time and will be returning around 3:00. The permission form for the trip needs to be returned by Thursday, May 12th.

8th Grade Trip to Six Flags Magic Mountain is scheduled for this Wednesday. We have been waiting for approval and apologize for the short notice. You will need to return the enclosed permission slip and $23 if your student is going. We will be purchasing the tickets after school tomorrow. On Wednesday your students will need to bring money for lunch. The van will be leaving at 7:30 please make sure your student is on time. The van will return at about 8:30 pm. We will be calling as we get closer to town to let you know of our exact arrival time.

May Crowning is on Friday. 8th grade students are allowed to dress in appropriate free dress. Any student not wearing appropriate dress will be
