6th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, students are doing another Author Study. This time it is Lois Lowry. The Author Study offers a special opportunity for students to focus on the work of a popular contemporary author. Students will be exposed to information about Lowry's life, which will give them insight into the person behind the stories. The two selections students will be reading are: “Crow Call” and “Looking Back.” The Sp./Voc. List this week is based on these selections. The test will be on Fri. May 6th.
Outside Reading: “Red Fern” students are reading Chapters 19-20 and completing Notebook Requirements for these chapters by Tues., May 10th.
Scholastic Book Orders due Friday, May 6th.
Social Studies- Students continue in Chap. 11 “Ancient Greeks” explaining the roles of Greek gods and the importance of religious festivals. Also, students will be able to compare and contrast the societies and economies of Sparta and Athens and their education practices.
Test on Chap. 11 Mon., May 9th.
Religion-Students have completed Chap. 18 and were quizzed on Mon., May 2nd. In beginning Chap. 19, “God Rules Through David and Solomon”, the student will become acquainted with David as a great king, know the strengths and achievements of Solomon and how he compromised his faith, and know the structure of the Temple.
Science- Students will be beginning their last unit for the school year. This last unit focuses on an introduction to weather. In this unit, they will learn about the atmosphere and how it affects conditions on the Earth's surface and our changing weather. The first chapter is this unit is Chapter 15, The Atmosphere. Students will discover the combination of gases that compose the atmosphere and then explain the roles of pressure and temperature. They will also explore the atmosphere's four layers. Next, students will learn about the heating of our atmosphere.
Math- Students will be working unit 10, Integers and Equations. This week they will be focusing on positive and negative numbers, comparing integers, adding and subtracting integers, and finally, using problem solving techniques to choose the correct operation.
PE - Students will continue to their Softball unit this week.

7th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, the first selection this week is “Charles”. The objectives to be met are; to promote independent active reading and to practice and apply skills learned in previous selections. In the second selection, “The Hounds of the Baskervilles”, students are reading to understand and appreciate a detective story featuring Sherlock Holmes, and to learn the skills involved in reading a mystery.
Sp./Voc. List this week is based on “The Hounds of the Baskervilles”. Test will be Fri., May 6th.
Outside Reading: “Roll of Thunder” Chapters 1-3, students have worked on writing brief summaries for each chapter along with an illustration for each chapter. A list of adjectives for this section was given to the students along with their definitions and students were to use these adjectives correctly in well-written sentences. Students will complete these activities for all the chapters of the book. A short quiz will be given Tues., May 3rd. The summaries, illustrations and sentences for Chapters 1-3 are due Tues., May 3rd. The summaries, illustrations and sentences for Chapters 4-5 are due Thurs., May 5th, for Chapters 6-8 due Tues., May 10th. Short quizzes will be given for these chapters (4-8).
Scholastic Book Orders due Friday, May 6th.
Social Studies- Students are completing Chapter 13, “Reformation and the Scientific Revolution” this week. Students will be able to describe the main beliefs of Calvinism as well as identify and describe other Protestant movements launched during the Reformation. In lesson 4, students will be able to characterize what is meant by the term Scientific Revolution and identify and describe the work of early scientists who questioned traditional ways of thinking. Chapter 13 test will be on Thursday, May 5th.
Religion-As they read and discuss Ch. 13, students will come to understand their call to holiness and the obstacles to that call.
Science- This week students will start their ecology unit. They will be learning about the concept of biomes and be able to describe several land biomes. Students will also be learning about the marine ecosystems and how they play an important role in the earth's environment. Finally, this week students will be learning about freshwater systems. Students will be starting a ecology project in which they will be creating a new animal and it's ecosystem. More information about this will be sent out later this week.
Math- This week, students will be finishing Unit 10. They will be focusing on relating length, area and volume, volume of cylinders, and the Pythagorean property of right triangles. There will be a review on Thursday and test on Friday.
PE - Students will continue to their Softball unit this week.

8th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, the first selection this week is “The Man without a Country”. Students will read to understand and appreciate a drama about a man who endures an unusual punishment for treason and to understand sequencing. The second selection, “Stop the Sun”, students read to understand and appreciate a short story about a son's struggle to communicate with his father about the Vietnam war. Students will enrich their reading by using active reading strategies. Sp./Voc. List this week is based on both of these selections.
Outside Reading: “Across Five Aprils”; Students are summarizing and illustrating each chapter and have completed Chapters 1-3 by Tues., May 3rd. Chapters 4-7 will be completed by Tues., May 10th.
Scholastic Book Orders due Friday, May 6th.
Social Studies- Students are completing Chapter 12 “A Nation Divided” this week and will be tested on Wednesday, May 4th. In beginning Chap. 13, “Reconstruction” students are looking back to Chapter 10 to recall what they learned about Southern economy and culture and applying this to a Reconstruction South with it's lack of slave labor and destruction in its few urban centers.
Religion- As they read and discuss Ch. 13, students will come to understand their call to holiness and the obstacles to that call.
Science- Students will be beginning their last unit for the school year. This last unit focuses on an introduction to astronomy. In this unit, they will learn about our closest neighbors - the moon, the sun and the planets that make up our solar system and how our solar system was formed. The first chapter in the unit is Chapter 17, Formation of the Solar System. This unit describes how the solar system was formed from a collapsing nebula. Students will learn why the planets that are formed close to the sun are rocky, while those far from the sun are large and gaseous. They will also lean about the planetary orbits and rotation and laws that describe these motions. Finally, this week students will be learning about the sun and it's atmosphere.
Math-Students will be finishing their unit on quadratic and exponential functions this week. They will continue to learn about exponential functions on Monday. Then they will be learning about the growth and decay and geometric sequences. This chapter had some challenging concepts so students will have a review on Monday and Tuesday, next week. Their test will be on Wednesday.
PE - Students will continue to their Softball unit this week.
Health - This week students will start their mental and emotional health unit. The first week will focus on self-esteem and what makes each of them unique. Then students will be learning about how to respond to life's challenges and develop rational strategies for living.
