6th Grade
Language Arts- In Literature, students will read a newspaper article, which is a useful companion piece to “Lob's Girl.” Also, students will read “My First Dive with the Dolphins” to understand and appreciate an essay and to make generalizations to help understand this essay.
Spelling/Vocabulary list this week is based on “First Dive.” The test will be on Thursday, March 17th.
Outside Reading: “Red Fern”, students are completing the notebook requirements for section two, chapters 6 - 9 by Friday, March 18th. If students need more time to complete these requirements, they need to request this from Mrs. Martin by Wed., March 16th.
Social Studies- Daily Geography Quiz #6 was taken on Fri., March 11th. Because students are able to use their corrected weekly Daily Geography, everyone should be getting 100%.
In Social Studies, students continue in “Ancient India” to understand the influence the geography had on this early civilization and to explain the Aryan contributions to the developing Indian tradition.
Religion- Because the sixth grade participated with the seventh and eighth grades in their study of the saints, the next chapter had not been started. Students were given the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thurs., March 10th. This leads in well to Chap. 14 “God Forgives Us.”
Science- Students will continue to work on chapter 10. They will be focusing on the different types of stream deposits, the relationship between rich agricultural regions and river flood plains, underground water, and how to use water wisely. There will be a test over this chapter next week.
Math- This week students will be working on space figures, surface area and volume. There will be a test over this unit, next Thursday.
PE - Students will continue to work on their soccer unit this week. They will be picking teams and start playing games.

7th Grade
Language Arts- In Literature, students will read “The Eternal Frontier” to understand and appreciate an essay about space exploration and familiarize themselves with a popular author of the 20th century. Also several poems will be red to promote independent active reading and to make comparisons and contrasts among five poems.
Spelling/Vocabulary list this week is based on the above selections. The test will be on Thurs., March 17th.
Outside Reading: “Dragonwings” quiz on Section Two, Mon., March 14th.
Social Studies- Daily Geography Quiz #6 was taken on Fri., March 11th. Because students are able to use their corrected weekly Daily Geography, everyone should be getting 100%.
In Social Studies, students continue in Chapter 10 to understand feudalism and to compare/contrast the development of feudalism in Western Europe and in Japan. The test for Chap. 10 will be Thurs., March 17th or Fir., March 18th.
Religion-For the most part, students did an excellent job learning about a particular saint. I was impressed with their ability to remember the information they read without looking much at their notes. This week the class will begin examining the Crusades and the Protestant Reformation.
Science- Students will start Chapter 14, Invertebrates. They will receive a packet that will be due March 24th. Students will be learning about the difference between radial and bilateral symmetry, how sponges are different from other animals, segmentation, and the main characteristics of arthropods and echinoderms.
Math- This week students will start Unit 9, Expression and Equations. Students will be focusing on exponents and roots, operations with both monomial and polynomial expressions and evaluation polynomial expressions.
PE - Students will continue to work on their soccer unit this week. They will be picking teams and start playing games.

8th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, students will be reading a variety of selections in poetry and nonfiction. In keeping with the theme, the selections celebrate the triumph over a challenging life obstacle.
Spelling/Vocabulary list this week is based on the above selections. The test will be on Thurs., March 17th.
Outside Reading: “Diary of Anne Frank” quiz on Act One was changed to Mon., March 14th. Act Two will be completed by Fri., March 18th.

In Social Studies, students continue in Chap. 8, Lesson 2 “Achieving Manifest Destiny”, and Lesson 3 “Settling the West”. The objectives are:
· Explain how war with Mexico helped the United States achieve its Manifest Destiny.
· Describe how Texas gained independence.
Describe life on the California mission and ranches.

The focus will be on how the elements are arranged, comparing metals, nonmetals and metalloids, the differences between a periods and group, similar properties of the elements in groups of the periodic table. Instead of a study guide, they will have a report. Each student has picked one element from the periodic table to research. They are to answer the following questions: When was it discovered? How did the element get its name? What are its properties? What are its uses? Is the element found in any common materials? How is it obtained? They are to report their finding in the form of a story written form the element's point of view.
Math-Students have started Chapter 9 this week. This chapter focuses on factoring. This week students will learn to find the prime factorization of integers and monomial, factoring using distributive property, and factoring trinomial: x2 +bx+ c.
PE - Students will continue to work on their soccer unit this week. They will be picking teams and start playing games.
Health - Students will be watching a movie about how the different systems of the human body work together.

General Notes:
Thanks to all who helped it last Friday's Fish Fry. We still have one more to go and still need help this Friday. If you can help, please sign up in the school office.
If you have not submitted your student's registration for EYH it needs to be in the school office by noon on this Thursday, March 17th. We have had approximately ten students register so far.
This Friday, March 18th, we will have a school wide field trip to the IVW Concert Series. We will be gone from 9:30 until around noon.
The end of the 3rd quarter is on Friday, March 18th.
