6th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, one of the student's concentrations this week is on the story “Lob's Girl”. It begins Unit Four, Part One with its emphasis on an amazing pet who forever enriches the life of an entire family. Students will read to understand and appreciate a short story and recognize cause and effect to help understand foreshadowing.
The Spelling/Vocabulary list this week is based on the above selection. The test will be on Fri., March 11th.
Outside Reading: “Where the Red Fern Grows” is the novel students have begun to concentrate on and they will be creating a notebook. The requirements for this notebook are on a separate handout. Students will be aware of deadlines. For example, Section I test will be on Fri., March 11th and students will have all related requirements for the notebook for Section I complete, March 11th.
Social Studies- Daily Geography Quiz #6 will be Fri., March 11th. It is based on Daily Geography for the weeks of 2-14, 2-21, 2-28 and 3-7. Students will use the corrected copies of the weeks of Daily Geography in order to complete Quiz #6. Students have completed Chap. 9, China and will be tested on this chapter Tues., March 8th.
In this Unite, students will go back to Chapter 8 to study Ancient India. The first objectives to be met are; the student will:
- Be able to describe features of South Asian geography and how they influenced early civilizations of India.
- Be able to describe the development level of the Indus Valley civilization.
- Be able to explain how we know about trade between the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia.
Religion-This week, students are completing Chap. 13, God's People Learn God's Way. Objectives that are being stressed are to understand the threefold function of conscience in decision making, to know the way to form a correct conscience and to make Christian decision as a sign of faith. The test for Chap. 13 will be on Wed., March 9th.
Chap. 14 will be started this week with the faith focus: God forgives us as he did the Israelites in the desert.
Students are doing a good job on reading their goal of each bringing in five non-perishable items during Lent. To date, the total # of items = 20.
Science- The test of Chapter 9 will be this week. There will be a review on Monday. The written test will be on
Tuesday and the lab test on Wednesday. Students will then begin Unit 4, Reshaping the Land. In this unit they will learn about the way the surface of the Earth changes. There is a constant struggle between the forces that build up Earth's land features and those that break them down. The mountains built by Earth's internal forces are torn down by the actions of weathering and erosion. Students will learn about many events that have occurred tin the struggle as natural changes in the Earth's features continue to take place.
Math- Students will begin Unit 7, Geometry of Plane figures. The focus of this week will be perimeter and area of parallelograms, triangles, and circles.
PE - The soccer unit will continue this week. Students will concentrate on learning goalie, stopping, kicking and throw-in skills.

7th Grade
Language Arts- In Literature, students will read “The Serial Garden” to understand and appreciate a fantasy about a boy who tries to help star-crossed lovers. And, to understand and analyze irony and to express understanding of the story by writing a fantasy story about how Miss Pride first got hold of her boxes of Breakfast Brikks cereal.
The Spelling/Vocabulary list is based on the above selection and the test will be on Fri., March 11th.
Outside Reading: “Dragonwings”, Quiz on Chapters 1 and 2 on Tuesday, March 8th. Chapters 3-5 will be completed by March 14th.

Students completed Chap. 9 last week and are beginning Chap.10 in Unit 5 this week. Unit 5 medieval Societies begins with “Feudal Europe and Japan”. In chapter 10, students will read about how the feudal system worked in Europe and Japan. In the first lesson, students will read about changes that took place in Europe after the fall of Rome.
Religion-As we continue to study the saints of the Church, students will prepare to be interviewed as a saint of their choice. They will come in appropriate costumes (with props) for the classroom interviews that will take place on Thursday. If you would like to help your child prepare, interview him or her. We have created the scoring rubric for this project, and you may ask your child to see it.
Science- This week students will start Unit 5, Animals. In this unit they will learn about many different typed of animals, maybe even some that they never knew existed. They will be learning what an animal is, their behavior and how they live together. Students will begin unit 5, with Chapter 13, Animals and Behavior. Instead of a study guide students will be writing a report for this chapter. Students need to choose a species from each of category of insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals. They will need to write a brief report about the species that describes all of the characteristics that make it an animal. This report should be a minimum of 8 paragraphs. Students should also include where they got their information.
Math- Students will be wrapping up unit 8, this week. They will be leaning about rational numbers. The focus will be on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers. There will be a review on Thursday and a test on Friday.
PE - The soccer unit will continue this week. Students will concentrate on learning goalie, stopping, kicking and throw-in skills.

8th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, students will be reading a variety of selections: “Painful Memories” will be read to understand and appreciate a humorous essay about dating. “The Runaway” and “Macavity: The Mystery Cat” will be read to appreciate two poems about animals. And “The Gift of the Magi” will be read to understand and appreciate a classic short story about a young married couple's sacrifices for each other. A variety of activities will be used from the Resource Book.
The Spelling/Vocabulary list is based on “Painful Memories” and “The Gift of the Magi”. The test will be on Fri., March 11th.
Outside Reading: Students have been reading “The Diary of Anne Frank” and will be finished with Act One on Fri., March 11th. Students are completing activities related to Act One.

Students have completed Chapter 7 and taken the test on Mon., March 7th. Students begin Chapter 8 in Unit 4 this week. Unit 4, “The Development of America's Regions”, begins with “The West”. In Chapter 8, students will learn how the United States expanded westward. The first lesson explains why exploration of the Louisiana Territory was important to the United States and evaluates how well the Lewis and Clark expedition achieved its goals.

Science- Students will finish Chapter 12. They will have a lab on Tuesday in which they will construct atomic nucleus for 7 different elements using foam balls and toothpicks. The focus of the week will be on section 2, the atom. They will be learning how small they are, the different elements and how they differ, and atomic mass.
Math-Students will be completing Chapter 8. There is a review on Tuesday and a test of Wednesday. They will then begin Chapter 9, Factoring. This chapter will cover the factoring of integers, monomials and polynomials. Students learn to find the Greatest Common Factor of the monomials in a polynomial. They use the GCF and the distributive property to factor polynomials. Students also apply the Zero Product Property to solve quadratic equations.
PE - The soccer unit will continue this week. Students will concentrate on learning goalie, stopping, kicking and throw-in skills.
Health - Students will have their test over the AOD unit on Wednesday, March 9th.

Congratulations to our Science Fair winners. For 6th grade 1st place, Alex Morris; 2nd place (tie) Kelly Linck and Jenny Stinger-Smith; 3rd place Jimmy Cross. For 7th grade 1st place, Amanda Cordes; 2nd place, Katie Anders; 3rd place, Lexie Winterely. For 8th grade 1st place, Aurora Ostrom; 2nd place, Kevin LaBrie. Let us wish our 1st place students luck in the Kern County Science Fair on April 13th.
Please remember that school will be released at 11:30 on Thursday and there will be no school on Friday or Monday. Please have a safe and restful weekend.

This is a opportunity for middle school girls to increase their awareness of the importance of math and science study. If your student is interested please the registration form to school by March 10th.
