6th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, two poems will be studied to understand author's use of theme in narrative poems. These two poems continue the theme of fairness between friends. The reading selection “Abd Al-Rahman Ibrahima” from “Now Is Your Time” will concentrate on the student understanding authors use of sources of information. The student will use chronological order to help understand the sequence of events.
The Spelling/Vocabulary list this week is based on the above reading selection. Test on Friday, Feb. 11th.

Social Studies- 6th, 7th and 8th graders will have Daily Geography Quiz #5 on Friday, February 11th. On Monday, February 7th, students received D.G. for the weeks of Jan. 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st, in order to make corrections and/or completions by Friday.
Students will complete chap. 7 this week, covering the “New Kingdom” and “Egypt and Kush”. Students will be able to compare and contrast the reigns of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III in their goals and achievements. Also, the student will be able to describe what Egypt gained as a result of the conquest of Kush and analyze the conditions in Egypt that enabled Kush to conquer it.

Religion-In completing Chap. 11, students will see life as a journey to the Father and connect with the Old Testament journey in the Exodus. Quiz on Chap. 11 will be Tues. or Wed. Students will begin Chap. 12 We Live the Commandments Today. Students also focus on the beginning of Lent with mass on Ash Wed. and our responsibilities for the celebration of Mass on Friday, Feb. 11th.

Science- Students will be continuing to learn about volcanoes this week. They will focus on describing the effects that volcanoes have on Earths, compare the different types of volcanoes, magma, and predicting volcanic eruptions.

Math- This week students will finish up Unit 6. Students will be learning about finding a number using percents and drawing graphs. There will be a review on Wednesday and test on Thursday. They will then begin Unit 7, Geometry of Plane figures on Friday.

PE - We finished our Volleyball unit last week with a tournament. Congratulation Ace, you're the Champs. This week we will begin our unit on Gymnastics.

7th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, students read “Koden” to understand and appreciate a short story about a character who expresses her individuality within a tradition and to enrich reading by using active reading strategies. Also students will read “I Am A Native of North America” to understand and appreciate an essay in which a Native American expresses his culture's attitude toward living things. Appropriate resource activities will be completed.

Students have begun Chap. 8 China (Happy Chinese New Year). The objectives to be accomplished are:

  • To identify and explain the factors that made China difficult to govern,
  • To explain the reasons for the spread of the Buddhist religion in China,
  • To describe the techniques used by Emperor Wen to unify the Chinese empire.
In studying “The Great Wall”, students will recognize the dangers to the emperor and the empire.

Religion-Students will learn about the Communion of Saints this week as they read and discuss Chapter 10. They will read scripture passages in which St. Paul speaks about “saints.” They will write an in-class essay on how the different members of the Church help one another.

Science- Students will be starting Unit 4 Plants this week. The first chapter is the introduction of plants. They will be learning about identifying the characteristics that all plants share, the origin of plant and the four main groups of plants.

Math- This week students will be beginning Unit 7, Geometry. The focus of this week will be on points, lines and angles.

8th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, students will read “Von” to understand and appreciate an oral history about a South Vietnamese boy's escape to America and to enrich reading by predicting outcomes. Also students will read “The Hitchhiker” to understand and appreciate a radio drama about a man's fateful encounter with a spectral hitchhiker and to identify and understand the concept of foreshadowing.
The Spelling/Vocabulary list this week is taken from the above reading selections. Test on Friday, Feb. 11th.

Chap. 5 “Creation of a Party System” test is on Monday, Feb. 7th. It was postponed form Fri., Feb 4th. Students are working in Chap. 6 “The Maturing Republic” (as they themselves mature). The students will identify the republican ideals of early American society and describe how the ideals of the self-made man and market-oriented individualism developed as the nation expanded westward. In Lesson 2, the student's will be able to explain how 1800's politics reflected popular notions of individualism and expansion and describe how Jackson used his power as President to make widespread changes.

Religion- Students will learn about the Communion of Saints this week as they read and discuss Chapter 10. They will read scripture passages in which St. Paul speaks about “saints.” They will write an in-class essay on how the different members of the Church help one another.

Science- Students will complete Chapter 10, The Energy of Waves, this week. They will learn about identifying and describing the four wave properties. There will be a Written test on Thursday and Lab test on Friday.

Math-Students will continue to work on Chapter 7. The focus of this week will be substitution, elimination using addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

PE - We finished our Volleyball unit last week with a tournament. Congratulation Ace, you're the Champs. This week we will begin our unit on Gymnastics.

Health - Students will start the unit on Alcohol and other Drugs. They will be learning about the effects alcohol and other substances have on physical, mental, social and environmental aspects of health.

General Notes:

The Lent season will begin this week on Ash Wednesday. Please join us for Saint Ann School Mass at 8:15. This season also means Fish Fries. The middle school will be hosting the ones on March 11th and 18th. We will need volunteers to help make this event a success.

Middle School earned 3,500 tickets, so they will be having their pizza party tomorrow at lunch. They will still need to bring a snack and other food if they want more than pizza.
