6th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, students are reading “Oh Broom, Get to Work” by Yoshiko Uchida. Students will not only understand and appreciate a memoir but also use connecting to help understand the story. Students will also be able to explain the effects of common literary devices.
Spelling/Vocabulary list, this week, is taken from the above selection, test on Fri. Jan 21st.
Outside Reading - Students will be making their next selection in one of the following genres:
- Historical Fiction
- Realistic Fiction
- Science Fiction or
- Fantasy
Students should be encouraged to make their choice in a genre they did not select on the previous Individualized Reading Contract. (Selection of book by Jan 25th) Individualized Reading Contract filled out by Jan 27th.
Social Studies- Daily Geography Quiz #4 returned on Jan 18th requires a parent signature - to be returned Jan 19th. Students begin Chap. 7 Ancient Egypt, Lesson 1focuses on the features of Egypt's' geography that were critical to the development of civilizations there. At the same time students will be researching for the “Walk Through The Ancient World” which covers Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Religion-Students begin Unit 3 “God Guides the Chosen People”, the students will view the Exodus as God's greatest act of saving love in the Hebrew Scriptures and will come to appreciate the commandments as a gift to deepen their covenant relationship with God. Chapter 10 “God Rescues the Chosen People from Slavery.”
Science- This week we will be starting Chapter 7, Earthquakes. Students will be learning about what earthquakes are. They will determine where earthquakes come form and what cause them. Students will also learn how to identify different types of earthquakes and describe how they travel through the earth.
Math- Student will have a review of Unit 5 on Tuesday and the unit test on Wednesday. They will then start Unit 6, Ratios, Proportions and Percents, on Thursday. Students will be learning about writing ratios and unit rates.
PE - Students will continue their volleyball unit. This week we will be playing games. Each of the teams will play each other at least twice before the tournament.

7th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, the selection for this week is “The Noble Experiment”. Besides reading to understand and appreciate an excerpt from an autobiography by a legendary athlete, students will have practice in distinguishing fact and opinion. This is a life long skill, which benefits the student.

Students begin Unit 4, Asian Civilizations, Chapter 7, Three Empires, Lesson 1 “The Mongols”. In this unit, students will be studying different civilizations that developed in Asia. The objectives of Lesson 1: describe the geography of the steppe and its effect on the life of the Mongols, discuss the social or organization of the Mongols, and describe the expansion of the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan. Students will be researching the Ancient Civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Religion-Students will be learning about Mary, the Mother of the Church. They will examine some of the more common devotions to Mary practiced by the Church, and they will answer some of the misconceptions that non-Catholics have about our attitude toward Mary.
Science- Students will be starting Chapter 9, The History of Life on Earth. They will be learning about fossils, the geologic time scale, causes of mass extinctions and the theory of plate tectonics.
Math- Students will be working on Unit 6, Data, Statistics, and Probability. This week the focus will be on line plots, stem-and-leaf plots, box-and-whisker plots and scatter plots.
PE - Students will continue their volleyball unit. This week we will be playing games. Each of the teams will play each other at least twice before the tournament.

8th Grade
Language Arts-In Literature, students are completing “once Upon a Time When We Were Colored”. The purpose for reading this is to understand and appreciate an autobiographical account of life in segregated Mississippi. (Take Home Test on “Colored” is due Jan. 20th) The other selection this week is “The Home Front: 1941-1945” a work of nonfiction about the effects of World War II on a town in Texas. (Home Front Test on Jan 21st)

Students begin Unit 3 “Establishing the New Nation”, Chapter 5 “The Creation of a Party System”, Lesson 1 “Internal Conflict”. In this unit, students will be studying the unfolding of the American drama in the next three chapters. The objectives of Lesson 1: illustrate the difference between Federalist and Republican ideals, explain why there was disagreement over Hamilton's financial programs, and summarize the events that led the Federalist-controlled Congress to pass the Alien and Sedition Acts.
Religion- Students will be learning about Mary, the Mother of the Church. They will examine some of the more common devotions to Mary practiced by the Church, and they will answer some of the misconceptions that non-Catholics have about our attitude toward Mary.
Science- Students will start Chapter 9, Energy and Energy Resources, this week. They will be learning about the relationship between energy and work, compare kinetic and potential energy and difference forms of energy.
Math-Students will be focusing on solving linear inequalities. The focus of the week will be multi-step inequalities, compound inequalities, solving open sentences involving absolute value and graphing inequalities. There will be a review of the chapter on Monday and a test on Tuesday.
PE - Students will continue their volleyball unit. This week we will be playing games. Each of the teams will play each other at least twice before the tournament.
Health - Students will focus on the distribution of disease. They will also learn about the experts in the discovery of disease and disease prevention and control.

General Notes:
Walk Through The Ancient World
Students in grades 6 and 7 will be participating in this program on Jan 26th. A separate letter to parents is being sent home. Students will need to memorize their Expert word Cards and Character Cards.
