6th Grade

Language Arts-students will explore a variety of objectives in enjoying independent reading, using written text as a model for reading and understanding the literary terms of major and minor characters, character traits, setting, literary device, imagery, simile, and personification. Students are continuing to work on “Woodsong” and the activities associated with this novel. Students will complete the reading of the book and activities by Jan. 11th. The Spelling/Vocab. will be based on the literary readings and the test is on Fri. Jan. 7th. Scholastic Book Order Forms passed out this week have a due date of Wed. Jan 12th.

Social Studies- Students continue to work on Chap. 6, Mesopotamia. Objectives for this chapter are: students will describe the conditions and events that led to the rise of kinship in Mesopotamia and trace the development of cuneiform writing. They will define empire and evaluate Sargon's success in reaching his goals. Students have started working on a Mini-Report for this Chap. It will be due 1-12. Daily Geography Quiz #4 will be completed on Friday, Jan 7th.

Religion-In Chap. 8 " The Israelites Journey to Egypt" student will focus on: becoming acquainted with the story of Joseph and know ways to grow in a trustful acceptance of God's providence.

Science- This week students will be starting Unit 3; The Relentless Earth. This unit focuses on the Earth's internal structures. They will begin Unit 3 with Chapter 6, Plate Tectonics. Students will discover facts about the inside of earth and it's restless continents. Students will learn to identifying and describing the layers of the earth, defining tectonic plates, Wagner's theory, and what happens in the sea's floor.

Math- Students will have a review of Unit 4 on Monday. There will be an optional retake test on Tuesday during lunch. They will also begin Unit 5, Measurement. Students will be learning about metric measurement, temperature, time zones and elapsed time.

PE - Students will begin a unit on Volleyball this week. We will focus on the rules and basic techniques.

7th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, students are using the vocabulary from “The Christmas Carol” for this week's Spell/Vocab. list. The test for this week's Spell/Vocab. will be Friday, Jan. 7th. An open book, take home test on “The Christmas Carol” is due Wed. Jan. 5th. Students will use “ Writing From Experience” pp. 246-253 to explore the characteristics of a short story and create their own story. Scholastic Book Order Forms passed out this week have a due date of Wed. Jan 12th.

Social Studies- Students are beginning Chapter 6 “ Central and Southern Africa” and will be reading about kingdoms of this area in the next four lessons. The first lesson will center on the impact of geography on the movement of the early peoples in central and southern Africa, (in particular the spread of Bantu culture). In lesson two, students will analyze the effect of the monsoon winds on the development of trade in East Africa and describe the contracts among international cultures in the coastal trading cultures of East Africa. Daily Geography Quiz #4 will be completed on Friday, Jan 7th. Students will use D.G. from the weeks of 11-29, 12-6, 12-13,1-3, and additional on the hand out from Monday 1-3.

Religion-Students are finishing their oral reports on the different rites of the Catholic Church. They will then focus on how Catholics worship God and the liturgical year.

Science- Students will begin working on Chapter 8, The Evolution of Living Things. This week will focus on learning how fossils provide evidence that organisms have evolved over time, identifying three ways that organisms can be compared to support the theory of evolution, and Darwin's Theory.

Math- This week students will continue to work on Unit 5, The application of percents. There will be a short review of sections 1-4 on Monday. Students will then learn about percentage of increase or decrease, discount, list price, net price, commission and interest.

PE - Students will begin a unit on Volleyball this week. We will focus on the rules and basic techniques.

8th Grade

Language Arts-In Literature, students read the selection, “White Mice” by Ruben Salay-Marquez, p.228. The objectives are: to understand and appreciate a short story about a teacher's experiences with her bilingual students, to identify and analyze a surprise ending, and to express understanding of the story through a choice of writing forms, including rewriting and narratives. The Spelling/Vocabulary is from this week's selection, “White Mice” and the test will be on Friday, Jan. 7th. Scholastic Book Order Forms passed out this week have a due date of Wed. Jan 12th.

Social Studies- Students continue in Chapter 4 and will be able to describe the political process that led to the states' ratification of the Constitution and be able to explain why many people thought the Constitution was incomplete. Daily Geography Quiz #4 will be completed on Friday, Jan 7th

Science- Students will be starting Unit 3, Work, Machines, and Energy. In this unit they will explore the scientific meaning of work and learn how machines make work easier. They will find out how energy allows us to do work and how different forms of energy can be converted into other forms of energy. They will also learn about heat and how heating and cooling systems work. They will begin leaning about these concepts with Chapter 8, Work and Machines.

Math-This week students will continue to learning about slope.

PE - Students will begin a unit on Volleyball this week. We will focus on the rules and basic techniques.

Health - Students will be starting their unit on the prevention and control of disease. They will be learning about infectious diseases and personal responsibility about their health.
