6th Grade
Language Arts- The answers to the questions for the Outside Reading book, “Shadow of the Bull”, Chapters 9-11 are included in second quarter's grading period. The student's grade for these chapters is written on the last page of all the chapter's answers. Students received these in class Monday, Nov. 15th. For literature, we are doing an author study on Gary Paulson. Standards- Based Objectives:
- To appreciate the works of a contemporary American writer for young adults.
- To explore some of the works Paulson has written during his career.
Spell./Vocab. test on Friday Nov.19th.
Students will select an outside reading book in one of the following genres:
Historical Fiction
- Realistic Fiction
- Science Fiction
And fill out Individualized Reading Contract by Friday, Nov.19th. Contract will be handed in by Dec.16th.
Social Studies- Chap. 4 The Depths of Time p.88. Objectives:
- to identify sources of evidence and methods of interpreting evidence about the earlier humans
- to explain the connection between tool making, language, and the development of culture
- to list the developments in human culture from Homo erectus to Cro-Magnon.
Daily Geography Quiz #3 Friday Nov.19th.
Science- Students will finish chapter 4 this week, with learning about metaphoric rock. There will be a written test over the chapter on Thursday and a lab test on Friday.
Math- This week students will begin Unit 4, Fractions. They will be focusing on adding and subtracting both like and unlike dominators. They will also use a pictograph to solve word problems.
Religion-In the studying Chap. 6 “Abraham Is Our Father in Faith” p.42, students will know the story of Abraham's call and God's covenant with him and appreciate Abraham's faith and obedience in being willing to sacrifice his only son.
PE - Working as a team will be the focus this week in PE. The students will engage in several activities that will increase their cooperation, teamwork and other team sports skills.

7th Grade
Language Arts-The Outside Reading book “Jacob” will be completed this week covering chapters 15-20 and the study skills: understanding characters, analyzing cause/effect relationships, and making predictions. Tests for “Jacob” will be on Tues. Nov.16th, Thurs. Nov. 18th, and Friday Nov.19th. In literature, we will be reading a short story “ Hollywood and the Pits”. Objectives:
- To understand and appreciate a short story about the challenges faced by a former child star
- To express understanding of the story through a choice of writing forms.
Spell./Vocab. test on Friday Nov.19th.
Students will select an outside reading book in one of the following genres:

- Realistic Fiction
- Science Fiction

Social Studies- Completion of Chapter 4, The Empire of “Islam” with the test for the chapter on Wed. Nov. 17th. Students will begin their study of Unit 3, Chapter 5 “West Africa” this week. Objectives include: identification of the major land regions in Africa south of the Sahara, explanation of the significance of the Nok Iron Age and identification of the factors that helped make Ghana a successful trading empire.
Daily Geography Quiz #3 will be on Fri. Nov.19th.
Science- Students will continue to focus on cells. This week they will begin Chapter 5, The Cell in Action. They will be learning about a cell's energy, cycle and how it exchanges with the environment.
Math- This week students will start unit 4, Ratios, Proportions and Percentages. Students will be working with rations, unit rates, direct and indirect proportions. They will also be using word problem activities to see if answers to problems are reasonable.
Religion-Students will finish studying the hierarchy of the Church (Ch. 6). They are responsible for understanding the vocabulary from the chapter and should note and define all unfamiliar words in their vocabulary notebooks. The test on Ch. 6 will be on Thursday.
PE - Working as a team will be the focus this week in PE. The students will engage in several activities that will increase their cooperation, teamwork and other team sports skills.

8th Grade
Language Arts-Outside Reading “Johnny Tremain” will be completed this week. The test is a take home test which will be handed in Friday, Nov.19th.
In literature, the students will be reading “The Splendid Outcast”. Objectives:
- To enrich reading by using active reading strategies
- To identify and understand the use of allusions and similes
- To express understanding of the story through a choice of writing forms, including newspaper headlines, a poem, and a paragraph.

Students will select an outside reading book in one of the following genres:
- Historical Fiction
- Realistic Fiction
- Science Fiction
And fill out an Individualized Reading Contract by Friday, Nov.19th. Contract by Friday, Nov.19th. Contract will be handed in by Dec.16th.
Social Studies- The students will start Unit 2 Chapter 3 “Toward the Constitution” p.80. Objectives:
- To trace the history that favored establishing the United States as a republican government with a written constitution and
- To explain how European acceptance of the Articles of Confederation helped Americans with the Revolutionary War.
Daily Geography Quiz #3 on Friday, Nov. 19th.
Science- Students will continue to learn about matter in motion. This week they will be focusing on describing force, friction and gravity.
Math-Chapter 3 test will be on Monday, November 15th. Students will then start Unit 2 Linear Functions. The first chapter (4) in this unit will emphasize graphing relations and functions. Students will learn the coordinate plane and relations this week.

General Notes:
In observance of Thanksgiving, students will have Monday, November 22nd through
Friday, November 26th off. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.
The first week of Making Better Choices was very successful. In this weeks Monday Envelope will be the first weekly letter explaining how your student did with the new program. Please discuss this letter with your student. It will then need to be signed by both of you and returned on Tuesday. If a letter is not returned with signatures, that student will lose break time until it is returned.
Scholastic Book Orders for November will be handed out Nov. 2nd and will be due to Mrs. Martin Nov. 9th.
