6th Grade

Language Arts-Students will continue working on pronouns, Ch. 3 in Language Network. Students will memorize the possessive pronouns this week. They also will be completing assignments related to their outside reading books.

Social Studies- Students will identify the location and describe the rise of the Roman Republic, including the importance of such mythical and historical figures as Aeneas, Romulus and Remus, Cincinnatus, Julius Caesar and Cicero.

Religion-Students will continue to discuss reconciliation in our lives and they will learn the meanings of venial and mortal sins, perfect contrition, virtue, and grace.

Science- Students will study the Earth's biomes: Tundra, Desert, Grassland, Tropical Rain Forest, Coniferous Forest, Deciduous Forest, Marine and Freshwater. Students will describe the climatic conditions of each biome, identify the organisms that survive in each biome and list the features that make each biome unique.

Math- This week students will work on the circumference and area of a circle, space figures, and surface area. All homework for Unit 7 is due tomorrow.

7th Grade

Language Arts-Students will work tonight on creating an outline for their response to the poem The Highwayman. They will complete the rough draft of their essay by the end of the week.

Social Studies- Students will review the Mayan settlements. Students will compare the regions in which the Tiwanakan and Moche civilization developed and compare the lifestyles of the Tiwanakans and Moche.

Religion-Students will explain the meaning of the calling of the twelve apostles, prove that Peter is head of the Church, perceive how the apostles share the authority of Jesus Christ and identify the four marks of the Church.

Science- Students will Students will begin study of Chapter 19 Body Organization and Structure. Students will describe four types of tissue and the levels of organization of the body. Students will also study the skeletal system and muscular system.

Math- Students will work on adding and subtracting integers, and drawing a diagram to solve problems. All homework for Unit 7 is due tomorrow.

Spanish- No Spanish class this week because we will have an informative meeting concerning the petroglyph field trip. Quiz on the Apostle's Creed next week.

8th Grade

Language Arts-Students will make corrections to the rough drafts of their essays at home. They should bring in the completed, error-free, final draft on Thursday. Please help your child proofread the essay if they ask you to do so. Since this is a contest with a deadline, there is no margin for lateness. I will not accept any essays turned in after Thursday. Students will have regular vocabulary work with words coming from the story “Flowers for Algernon.” We will continue to study about verbs in grammar.

Social Studies- This week students will learn about the Gettysburg Address, the roles taken by young men in the Civil War, and they will be able to summarize the toll of the Civil War in terms of deaths, destruction of land, and loss of morale.

Religion- This week students will work on Ch 18, The Lay Apostolate. Students will be able to define laity and apostolate.

Science-- Students will describe the shape and structure of the Earth and explain how the Earth got its layered structure and how this process affects the appearance of Earth's surface.

Math-Student will work on factoring trinomials, factoring differences of squares, and perfect squares and factoring. All homework for Ch 8 is due tomorrow.

Spanish- No Spanish class this week because we will have an informative meeting concerning the petroglyph field trip. Quiz on the Apostle's Creed next week.

General Notes:

Field Trip Information

The Middle School will attend the Avaz International Dance Theater at the China Lake Auditorium on Tuesday, April 20th. The following people have volunteered to drive: Danhauser, McKnight, Roberts, Wojciehowski, Champeny, Ostrom, Anders and Blubaugh. Thank you for your help drivers and we will see you at school by 9:40.

The Middle School will also participate in a field trip to the Petroglyphs on Friday. Students should wear hiking clothes (long pants, boots). Be prepared for cold or warm weather. Each student needs to bring lunch and a water bottle. Mrs. Rockdale is organizing this field trip and drivers as the base has added security precautions. Mrs. Rockdale will phone the driver volunteers to describe the expectations for the field trip.

Mrs. Black has organized the middle school field trip to the Norton Simon Museum on May 21st. More information will be provided.

High School Registration

information will be sent home today for 8th grade. The Burroughs High School Counselors will be here on May 10th to register students. If you have any questions, please contact the middle school teachers.

The Dance Committee will meet this week to put together plans for our first dance. Date and time for the dance will be provided soon.
