6th Grade

Language Arts-This week students will be focusing on poetry. They will learn literary terms such as rhyme, rhythm, free verse, simile and metaphor. To get our creative juices flowing, I have asked students to come to school on Thursday dressed in a particular color. They will then write poems based on their colors. The vocabulary work this week comes from our study of poetry. Since there are more words than usual, the test will be a week from today.

Social Studies- Students will complete several sets of study questions on Greece. The Greek God essay is due on Tuesday.

Religion-Students will discuss conscience formation and making decisions. They will understand how obligations, principles, and consequences are part of this decision-making.

Science- Students will discover cycles in time-annual rhythms, migration, hibernation, and estivation. Students will investigate the migration patterns of monarch butterfly, hummingbirds, storks, sea turtles and bats. Students will make a map showing migration patterns of birds.

Math- This week students will learn to construct triangles. They will study quadrilaterals and angle sums, and similar figures.

7th Grade

Language Arts-Students will finish their PowerPoint presentations (this was delayed by play practices). They will receive their next outside reading books.

Social Studies- Students will students will answer focus questions related to their assigned Renaissance person. Students will describe how each of the social classes contributed to the Renaissance in Italy. Students will discuss how the scholar Erasmus represents northern humanism.

Religion-The students should be able to identify and explain the reasons for the Incarnation and identify early heresies about the Incarnation (Chapter 7).

Science- Students will begin work on Chapter 7 Ecology

Math- This week students will learn to look for a pattern in order to help them solve word problems. They will learn how to construct congruent segments and angles.

Spanish- No class this week.

8th Grade

Language Arts-Students will submit their final drafts of their literary response essays, and they will get instructions for their next writing assignment. They will get their next books for reading outside of class. We will also begin working on verbs-transitive and intransitive, regular and irregular, and simple and perfect tenses.

Social Studies- This week students will finish the Chapter on the South and will begin studying the causes of the Civil War.

Religion- Students will work on Chapter 16 this week, The Works of Mercy and Happiness. They should be able to identify, explain, and illustrate each of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

Science-- Students will explain how a machine makes machines easier by changing the size or direction of a force. Students will describe and give examples of the force-distance trade-off that occurs when a machine is used.

Math-This week students will take Quiz 1 in Chapter 8 and they will work on adding and subtracting polynomials.

Spanish- No class this week.

General Notes:

Macbeth Gets Rave Reviews-
Thank you to all for coming out for our dinner theater Thursday night. The play was a wonderful success. The student performances were outstanding! A big thanks for those who donated props, especially Mr. Rall (castle and forest boxes). Kudos to the “costume queens” Michelle Blubaugh and Michelle Ostrom. The pot-luck dinner was delicious thanks to the effort of the parents. Thank you all again.

Conferences-
We look forward to meeting with parents this week. If you are unable to attend your assigned conference time, please let the office know. Middle School conferences will be held in room 8 (Mr. Olson's room). We will try to stick to the scheduled time of 15 minutes for each conference. We can always reschedule a conference if more time is needed. Thank you for the opportunity to teach your child.
