6th Grade
Language Arts-Students are working on improving their vocabulary using context clues and an understanding of base word, affixes, roots words, and word families.
Social Studies- Students are working in Li 3 in the China Unit. The Silk Road is heavily emphasized in this Li. Students will research the historical background of the Silk Road to set the scene for “traveling” the famous trade route. Students will discover four major geographic features-mountains, steppes, deserts, and oasises- with a 3-D Geography project. Students will observe the route of Marco Polo's journey on the Silk Road.
Science- Students will define weathering and talus. Students will describe the two types of weathering and list the types of mechanical weathering. Students will define exfoliation, frost action, root pry and landslide. Students will define chemical weathering, the types of chemical weathering and soluble rocks. Students will discuss how exposed surface area affects weathering rates.
Math- This week students will be learning equivalent fractions, decimals and percents, how to find a percent of a number, how to calculate discounts and simple interest, and how to find a percent. They will also learn how to find the number when a percent is known.
Religion-We are studying God's gift of his law to the Israelites. Students were given instructions about their religion project due next Monday. The quiz on Lesson 11 will be on Friday.

7th Grade
Language Arts-Students are finishing their lessons on nouns as direct objects, indirect objects, subjects, predicate nouns, and objects of prepositions. The test on Chapter 2 will be on Thursday.
Social Studies- Students will identify the major similarities in the development of feudalism in Western Europe and in Japan. Students will summarize the reasons that feudalism ended earlier in Europe than it did in Japan. Students will characterize the political situation in Europe, describe the reign of Charlemagne, and explain the importance of Alfred the Great and of William the Conqueror in the history of Medieval England.
Science-Students will discuss ways that animals communicate and list the advantages and disadvantages of living in groups. Students will describe the difference between radial and bilateral symmetry and describe the differences in the simple nervous system of the cnidarians and flatworms of simple invertebrates. Students will explain the difference between an open circulatory system and a closed circulatory system of mollusks and annelid worms.
Math-This week students will be learning about scatter plots, misleading graphs, they will make predictions from a graph, solve word problems by making a list, and learn about permutations and combinations.
Religion- Students will recognize the Holy Eucharist as the source and center of Christian living, understand the Eucharist as the greatest of sacraments and know how to receive the Eucharist properly. In the Visions Magazine, student will read stories and complete activities related to taking responsibility for ones actions. Students will also study how we can respond to God's call. Students will study scripture from Luke 5: 1-11.
Spanish- Students will learn some familiar expressions used in everyday communication. Quiz on Tuesday.

8th Grade
Language Arts-Students are finishing their review for the test on nouns. They will begin studying subject, object, and possessive pronouns. Please check how your child is coming along on reading Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
Social Studies- Students will review today for their Chapter 7 test tomorrow. On Wednesday, they will begin Chapter 8, The West.
Science- Students will give examples of different kinds of forces, determine the net force on an object, and compare balanced and unbalanced forces. Students will explain why friction occur, list the types of friction and explain how friction can be both harmful and helpful.
Math- Students are reviewing for their Chapter 6 Test today. The Chapter 6 Test is scheduled for tomorrow. I have noticed that not everyone is entirely comfortable with finding slopes and writing equations on various forms (Chapter 5). The rest of the week will be spent reviewing these concepts again. It is important that your child feel comfortable manipulating the equations into their various forms. Chapter 6 homework is due on Friday. The Chapter 5 packet is also due on Friday if students would like to improve their scores.
Religion-Students will work on Chapter 9, Mary: Mother of the Church. They will be able to define three privileges given to Mary. They will also be able to discuss the role of Mary in our lives today.
Spanish- Students will learn some familiar expressions used in everyday communication. Quiz on Tuesday.

The children were a great example of St. Ann's philosophy of educating the whole child in a faith-filled community. Middle School Basketball Schedule
An updated basketball schedule. We were able to arrange for seven practices at the Cerro Coso (CCCC) gym at no charge. So… a few practices at our school's courts have been cancelled. Their practices have been combined and moved to Cerro Coso. Please look over this new schedule carefully and arrange for car pools up to Cerro Coso.
