6th Grade
Language Arts-Students will focus on building vocabulary this week. They will learn strategies for understanding and remembering new words. They will analyze word parts and learn common word roots. They will be working on their essay or poem for Catholic Schools Week for homework. Students should be reading at least 10 pages a day in the Gary Paulsen novels.
Social Studies- Students completed the first Li in the China Unit. All civil service points will be collected today as we begin the second Li. In this new Li, students will learn about the Great Wall of China and create a timeline of Chinese history from the Shang and Zhou through the Mongol and Ming dynasties. Students will learn about the hardships endured by the common people during the building of the Great Wall. Students will learn more about Chinese history by playing a game on the Great Wall Game board.
Science- Students will wrap the study of the rock cycle and focus on preparing for the science fair. We will venture into Chapter 5 on Weathering and Soil Formation by the end of the week.
Math- Students will begin Unit 6 today on Ratios, Proportions, and Percents. They will start by learning how to write ratios and rates.
Religion-We will continue to study the Eucharist as the fulfillment of the Passover meal. Students will review and study for Quiz 10 on Moses and the Exodus.

7th Grade
Language Arts-Students will choose their new outside reading book. They will learn how to use outlines as organizational and study tools. We will also examine how to correctly paraphrase and summarize without plagiarizing.
Social Studies- Students will study Medieval Japan. Students will complete their Samurai Resume this week and study the values, social customs, and traditions prescribed by the lord-vassal system consisting of shogun, daimyo, and samurai and the lasting influence of the warrior code on the twentieth century.
Science-Students will begin study on Animals and Behavior in Chapter 13. Students will understand the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates and explain the characteristics of animals. Students will also explain the difference between learned and innate behavior.
Math-Students are finishing Unit 5 this week. They will begin Unit 6 on Data, Statistics, and Probability on Friday. Students will start by learning about line plots and histograms. Unit 5 Lesson 10 is due on Friday.
Religion- Religion 7 Students will study the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist by identifying reasons for the signs of bread and wine (“Take this and eat it: this is my Body.”) Students will also discuss transubstantiation and the Real Presence as dogmas of faith. In the Visions Magazine students will read 1 Corinthians 13.4-13 'Love is patient, love is kind….' and complete activities related to this scripture.
Spanish- Students will be learning some verbs today including comer (to eat), trabajar (to work), estudiar (to study), saber (to know, to know how), conocer (to know, to be acquainted with), tener (to have, to hold).

8th Grade
Language Arts-In grammar we will study how prepositional phrases are used in sentences. Students will also work on developing critical thinking skills by discussing relationships between ideas-focusing on comparison/contrast, cause and effect, and understanding analogies.
Social Studies- Students are reviewing for the Ch 6 test tomorrow. On Thursday students will begin Ch 7, People of the New Nation. They will be able to identify the factors that helped American family farms become more profitable. They should be able to list the contributions of port cities to the changing economy. Students should also be able to analyze the effect of economic and social changes on free blacks.
Science- Students will begin the study of a unit on Matter in Motion. Students will identify the relationship between motion and a reference point, determine the difference between speed and velocity and interpret a graph showing acceleration. Students will apply the study of motion to the chain reactions that they are designing for display at the science fair.
Math- Students are beginning this week by reviewing slope, slope-intercept form, and point-slope form. We will continue on where we left off from in Ch 6 on Thursday.
Religion-This week students will be reading articles based on current events and discussing them and the impact that they have on our society. The articles include President Bush's plan to ease the immigration law, Howard Dean's progress as a hopeful candidate for the upcoming presidential election, and NASA's latest attempt at exploring Mars. Students are also preparing for their mass this week.

Each student's Science Fair Proposal is due on Wednesday, January 21st . Students will write the PROJECT TITLE and PURPOSE on the project sheet at the back of the Science Fair Packet.
