6th Grade
Language Arts-As part of their author study, students are reading various novels by Gary Paulsen. They will analyze his writing style and how the anecdotes he tells reveal a great deal about his personality. In grammar students will focus on nouns (common, proper, forming plurals and possessives).
Social Studies- Students will read the Chinese virtue stories in their Student Guides. Each hsing has a different story. Each student will read about a Chinese myth and determine what elements best illustrate the story's moral lesson. Next, students will participate in the planning of their tableau presentation.
Science- Students will continue the study sedimentary and metamorphic. Students will study how sedimentary rocks are formed and compare clastic, organic, and chemical sedimentary rocks. Next, student will describe the conditions under which metamorphic rocks form. Students will begin thinking about a project for the Science Fair.
Math- Students will continue to work in Unit 5 by studying Line Graphs and Fahrenheit Temperature. Students will take Quiz 2 on Wednesday and their test on Friday. All homework for Unit 5 is due this Friday because it will be the end of the quarter.
Religion-Students completed a project about the ten plagues that led up to the Exodus of the Israelites. They will learn how the Passover meal was a foreshadowing of the Mass.

7th Grade
Language Arts-Students will finish their Middle Earth newspaper. The final exam for The Hobbit is on Thursday. Students will read “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. They will write a poem based on this story.
Social Studies- Students will study Medieval Japan. Students will study how Japan's geography provided a sourced of food, transportation, and protection from invasion. Students will discuss how Japan kept itself isolated and protected from outside influences. Students will learn how Buddhism eventually spread to Japan from Korea and China. Finally, students will read about the Taika Reforms and find how this reform reduced the power of the clan.
Science-Students will begin thinking about a project for the Science Fair. Student will focus on the preliminary work for the Science Fair. Student will also study applied genetics, define genetic engineering and list some of the benefits of combining the DNA of different organisms.
Math-This week students will continue to work in Unit 5 by studying discount, list price and net price, commission, simple and compound interest, and they will use a table to help them solve word problems. All homework up to Unit 5 Lesson 9 is due Friday because it is the end of the quarter.
Religion- Students will also study the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in Chapter 20. Students will explain and appreciate the indwelling presence of God. The Visions Magazine we use in religion has a wonderful article on the Gospels of Luke. We will research this Gospel writer and find out how he became inspired by Christ just by hearing stories of Christ's life.
Spanish- Students will be tested on how accurately they can write the Hail Mary.

8th Grade
Language Arts-Students review for the test on The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. In grammar they will study nouns as appositives and objects of prepositions. They will memorize a list of common prepositions for a quiz on Friday.
Social Studies- Students will begin Ch6, The Maturing Republic. They will see how the nation changed as it expanded from valuing the well being of the community and agragarian way of life to stressing the market economy and individualism. They will also learn how expanding suffrage led to Jacksonian democracy.
Science- Students will describe the properties and uses of acids and bases. Students will explain the difference between strong acids and bases and weak acids and bases. We will also watch a video “The Way Things Go?” which shows a chain reaction that continues for ½ an hour. Next, the 8th graders will design their own chain reactions for display at the Science Fair.
Math- Students will begin Ch 6 this week. They will solve linear equalities by addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will also solve compound inequalities and open sentences involving absolute value.
Religion-This week students will learn about the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, the Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation). Students will also take the ACRE (Assessment of Catechesis Religious Education) test this week.
Spanish- Students will be tested on how accurately they can write the Hail Mary.

General Notes:
A student attending Saint Ann School is a life-long learner who utilizes technology competently and responsibly to facilitate learning research, and growth.
Science Fair Projects- We will begin the Science Fair this week. All information will come home in next weeks Monday envelope. But, it is never too soon to start thinking about project ideas.
