6th Grade
Language Arts-After finishing our study of subject complements and direct objects, students will review how to fix sentence fragments and run-ons. Students will read an excerpt from Amelia Earhart's autobiography The Fun of It. They will have regular vocabulary work this week from this story.
Social Studies- Students will continue the study of Egypt with a close look at the flooding of the Nile, the first Egyptian dynasty, Step Pyramids, The Book of the Dead, the Rosette-Stone, Hatshepsut, Sirius, and Kush.
Science- Students will explore magnetic stripes on the ocean floor, the pole reversal, how the magnetic stripes in rocks are on either side of the ridge, and the location of the youngest rocks on the ocean floor. Students will define trenches and subduction, how older ocean floor moves down deep into the trenches, how molten rock becomes the mantle, and how the theory of plate tectonics frames the formation of mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc.
Math- Students will be learning reciprocals, dividing by a fraction, dividing fractions and whole numbers, dividing mixed numbers, and will solve word problems using diagrams.
Religion-We are studying the story of Joseph and how the Israelites came to live in Egypt.

7th Grade
Language Arts-After completing the quiz on Chapter 1 in Language Network, students will review common, proper, concrete, abstract and collective nouns. They have vocabulary work from The Hobbit, and they have a quiz on Ch. 1-3 on Tuesday.
Social Studies- Students will present information from their brochure on the 3 African Empires. Next, students will learn the characteristics of various types of African folklore including proverbs, fables, and folktales. Students will demonstrate the knowledge they've gained reading the various types of folklore by selecting a story, developing a play and presenting the play to the school. Students will make African masks to represent characters in the play.
Science-Students will diagram mitosis, explain how cells produce more cells, and explain how cell division differs in animals and plants.
Math-Students will work word problems and check if their answers are reasonable, scale drawings, and work percents, fractions, and decimals.
Religion- Students will study the Rite of Baptism, exorcism, chrism, vows, and the oils of the catechumens.
Spanish- This week students will learn the prayer Hail Mary, Ave Maria.

8th Grade
Language Arts-Students will read a selection by Anton Chekhov called “The Bet.” There will be regular vocabulary work related to the story. Students will examine the issue of capital punishment. In grammar we will continue looking at nouns as subjects and complements.
Social Studies- Students will help each other revise their American Revolution eyewitness story by peer critiques. Students will also be learning the importance of the Bill of Rights.
Science- Students will practice making electron-dot diagrams, describe diatomic molecules, study metallic bonds and review Chapter 14.
Math- Students are finishing Chapter 4 this week. They will be taking the second quiz of the chapter as well as a vocabulary quiz. This week students will also begin Chapter 5, Analyzing Linear Equations. All homework for Chapter 4 is due on Friday 12/5.
Religion-Students are continuing to learn about Our Lady of Guadalupe. They will also begin to learn about Las Posadas.
Spanish- This week students will learn the prayer Hail Mary and Ave Maria

General Notes:
Volleyball Camp: Camp will be held on December 13. See enclosed info to register.
Baking Bread and Raising Awareness:
“The kingdom of God is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of flour until the whole batch was leavened” (Matthew 13:33). The middle school students are going to measure out the biblical amount of flour (144 cups) along with other ingredients (salt, oil, honey yeast and water) to make 60 loaves of bread. The bread loaves will be given to those in need. The baking day is to be determined in the near future.
We ask that the following ingredients be sent in by this Friday.
- 14 - 5lb bags of flour
- 8 - 3 packs of yeast
- 5 jars of honey
